A Level Government and Politics

The A level Government and Politics is a well established and popular course within the faculty and sixth form. It is a dynamic and engaging course which is highly regarded by universities. Students completing the course have gone on to interesting and dynamic careers. Former students have worked alongside ministers, local MPs and councillors. Many have continued their studies in Politics and have completed degrees at universities including Liverpool, Durham, York, Leeds, Sheffield and Exeter. The course is delivered by a passionate and enthusiastic team which includes Mr Weightman, Mr Campbell and Miss Coxon.
Course Content
At As we study the British political system and the ways in which people participate in a modern liberal democracy. The course will look at the major political parties and consider the key political actors over the last 30 years , Thatcher, Blair, Brown and Cameron. Students will consider the role that pressure groups play in our political system by look at what they do to achieve their aims. This will involve a consideration of a range of groups and tactics including PETA, Greenpeace and Fathers 4 Justice. In unit 2 students will explore the constitution, prime minister, parliament and judiciary and consider how they have developed over time. In year 13 students will explore the major political ideas including Marxism, liberalism, anarchism, feminism, conservatism, fascism and ecologism.

28th November 2011 - Politics conference "What is the future of coalition politics in the future" speakers include Alan Duncan, Chris Huhne, Tony Benn, David Blunkett, Caroline Lucas. Coach leaves at 7.30am
21st February 2012 - Parliament visit - Includes tour of Parliament and viewing a parliamentary debate and opportunity to meet a local MP. Details to follow.
