Curriculum

Year 7 students with a reading age of two or more years below their chronological age are, with parental agreement, selected for extraction from Modern Foreign Languages for four lessons per week. Intensive work is done throughout year 7 to improve reading, spelling and comprehension skills. Those who have ongoing additional needs continue with four hours literacy support weekly. In years 10 and 11 those students for whom it is appropriate take Student Support as an option choice. They continue to work on literacy skills and have support with coursework or homework. Students are encouraged to take responsiblity for their own learning and are rewarded for their achievements.

Students in years 7 and 8 who present with persistant behavioural issues are selected for extra support within the faculty. They follow the curriculum in small groups and spend time working through the difficulties which led to their referral. Working closely with parents, the child and outside agencies, progress is made in behaviour management and reintegration in to the curriculum is gradual and supported. Ongoing progress is closely monitered and support given where necessary.
