John Port’s aim is to develop a coherent curriculum that builds on attainment in the primary phase and which helps all young people to become successful learners, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7, 8 and 9 students will study English, Maths, Science, a Modern Foreign Language (either French, German or Spanish), Humanities, Expressive Arts, Design Technology, Computing, PE, Citizenship and Social Sciences.

At the start of their first year at John Port, students are taught in “all ability” classes in all subjects.  This gives students time to settle and the school an opportunity to assess their strengths and weaknesses, before setting arrangements in some subjects.

In Years 8 and 9 some faculties and departments move towards arranging students into bands or into sets (groups of children with similar abilities in the subject concerned.)  As far as possible, sets are flexible to allow movement between them, depending upon the progress of individual students.

Key Stage 4

KS4 is a two year key stage beginning in Year 10. Students follow a set of core courses (English Literature, English Language, Mathematics, Science, PSHE (including RE, Careers, Citizenship, Enterprise, PSHE, and Work Related Learning) and Physical Education).

All students choose to study several other courses from a wide range of options. As part of this suite of courses, many students are required to study a language and a humanity subject. The school is committed to ensuring that all students follow a curriculum that is appropriate to their current and future needs.

Key Stage 5

The academy offers an expanding post-16 provision providing a range of academic and vocational qualifications such as AS levels, A levels and BTEC. Details of current courses are available in the Sixth Form Course Guide.
