Young Engineers STEM Contest - Derby University
A great result for JPS at ‘The Young Engineers & Scientists of Derbyshire’ inter school STEM contest
The 'Young Engineers & Scientists of Derbyshire' annually hold their interschool STEM contest where a limited number of students from local schools come to compete in a themed challenge, this included six of our own KS3 students, all of whom were to represent John Port at the contest held at Derby University.
From Year 8 we had Katie Phelan, Rowan Bates & Jacob Sadler and from Year 9 we had Ashryn Rigby, Sabina Kacinova and Harry Day.
This contest involved the students coming together as a team without teacher guidance to compete in a Design & Make challenge, the theme this year was 'you're fired'. Students had to design and build a projectile launcher that could be used to get emergency supplies to an offshore ship…. Easy right??
It brings me great delight to report that our teams were a great representation for our school, they conducted themselves exceptionally and this was noted and commented on to me from the judges (a team from local industries and STEM networks).
I am also delighted to report that:
Our Year 8 team won 2nd place in the Design category winning certificates, personal vouchers, goodie bags and a small sum of cash for school.
And a special mention to Harry Day from Year 9 who did us exceptionally proud, Harry was the recipient of a special award for Engineering Excellence following nominations and interviews with the judges.
All of the students involved did fantastic and it was a great day to be had by all … bring on next year!
