Year 6 Transition – information for parents

Mrs Smitton (Associate Assistant Principal) and Mrs Orr (Head of Year 7) are responsible for the Induction process for Year 6 students transferring to John Port Spencer Academy in September 2020.

We are doing as much as possible to help the Year 6 children with the move to secondary school in these unusual times and hope that you are able to access the ‘virtual’ transition activities available.

The following videos and booklets will help provide lots of information for parents and students:

If you require any printed copies, please let us know and this can be arranged for you. Completed booklets can either be emailed to or brought into the academy in September and handed to Form Tutors.

Information on how to access academy email has been sent out to parents and students. A guide about accessing this is available here: Guide to logging onto John Port SystemsPlease remember that when your child logs into their email account, only use the first part of the email address (take off When logging into Google however, use the whole email address including the part of it.

Children should have already received an ‘About You’ booklet to complete to help us get to know them. A copy of this is available here. If your child has not already filled in this booklet, please email a completed copy to us (as a PDF or docx. file please due to our email firewall).

There are some Maths, English and Science transition activities available. Usually, these are completed at the Primary Schools, however due to the current situation this might not be possible this year. These activities are available below if your child would like to have a go at them. If you would like a word copy of the Maths or Science booklet, please email us and we will send one to you. The English activity will need to be handwritten and not completed on a computer (so that we can see the handwriting). Why not have a go at the Science ‘Rainbow in a Jar’ competition?

If your Year 6 child enjoys writing, there is a competition for Young Writers which fits nicely with the English Transition Booklet. Please see this link for further information: The closing date for the Young Writers competition is Friday 24th July 2020.

Private Music Tuition: Please see this letter if you would like to know more about private music tuition that is available at John Port Spencer Academy: Letter about Private Music Tuition 2020/21

SEND: If your child is on the SEND register at primary school and you have not yet received a copy of the pupil passport to fill out at home, please could you complete this with your child? A blank word copy of the Pupil Passport is available here: Pupil Passport Document. Please return the completed document to Miss Woodward at as a PDF or .docx file.

We strive to ensure that all students are happy at John Port Spencer Academy and a successful transition into Year 7 is a key part of this. If you have any questions about your child’s transition into Year 7, please email and we will be happy to help.
