In October this year, John Port School Wind Band travelled to Melle in Germany for our 41st annual music exchange with the Melle Gymnasium band. This is the longest running exchange of it’s type that we know of and this year again the students and staff had an amazing time. John Port’s students stayed with host families from Melle Gymnasium and performed in three very well received concerts. The band were brilliant this year; in each concert they improved and the audiences loved their wide ranging programme which closed with the thunderous Doctor Who each night. Fiona Bower gave beautiful renditions of Carrickfergus while Benn Clarke amazed the audiences of Flight of the Bumblebee. Meanwhile Harry Barker, Charlotte Beckett, William Walker, Ben Thorpe and Charlotte Camwell led their sections and performed magnificently.
Along with great concerts, great friendships were made and the students enjoyed trips to beautiful Bremen and Osnabruck. We are already looking forward to the 42nd Melle exchange and welcoming the Melle Gymnasium band and their director, Mr. Sporreiter, to Etwall next October.
